Product Overview
Fosroc Supercast SW20 is a hydrophilic (swellable) waterstop strip. It is designed to swell when in contact with water, creating a pressure seal against the concrete to prevent water ingress.
The “Integrated Network” Concept
The primary unique selling point of this product is its ability to create a hybrid system:
-
Expansion Joints (Moving): You use the traditional Supercast PVC waterstops (dumbbell or center bulb profiles) because they can stretch and handle structural movement.
-
Construction Joints (Non-moving): You use the Supercast SW20 strip. It is much faster and easier to install than PVC waterstops because it does not require split formwork.
-
The Link: You use Supercast SWX, a swellable adhesive, to glue the SW20 strip directly onto the PVC waterstop, creating a continuous, leak-proof loop around the structure.
Key Advantages Explained
-
Solves Detailing Problems: Traditional PVC waterstops are very difficult to install around complex shapes, columns, or tight corners. SW20 is flexible and can simply be adhered to the concrete surface, eliminating the need for complex PVC welding in those areas.
-
Delayed Swell Action: This is critical for site work. If it rains after installation but before the concrete is poured, the strip will not swell immediately. This prevents the strip from “pre-swelling” and ruining the joint before the concrete sets.
-
Long-term Durability: The swelling properties do not degrade over time, even if the water level rises and falls (wet/dry cycling).
Typical Application Areas
-
Basements and underground structures.
-
Retaining walls.
-
Pipe entries (wrapping the SW20 around a pipe passing through a wall).
-
Construction joints in piles and diaphragm walls.

Primary Uses
Designed for integral sealing of construction joints in cast-in-situ concrete where conventional waterstops would require complex shuttering.
-
Basements: Secant piled and diaphragm walled basements.
-
Foundations: Pile caps.
-
Joints: Construction joints in vertical planes, kicker joints, and casting against old concrete.
-
Detailing: Simple solutions for pipe entries.
-
System Integration: Can be linked with Supercast PVC waterstops (using PVC for expansion joints and SW20 for construction joints) to maintain network continuity.
Key Advantages
-
Easy Installation: Simplifies detailing and eliminates complex shuttering.
-
Integration: Supercast SWX swellable adhesive enables full connection between SW20 and Supercast PVC networks.
-
Durability: Swelling properties are unaffected by long-term wet/dry cycling.
-
Controlled Swelling: Features a delayed swell action to allow for site tolerances and minimal swelling in fresh concrete.
-
Performance: Sustains an effective seal even in wet conditions.

Estimating & Supply
-
Standard Roll: 5m (length) x 10mm (thickness) x 20mm (width)
-
Alternative Profile: 25.4mm x 25.4mm is also available.
Application Specification
Supplier Specification:
Water swellable, basic polymer, hydrophilic waterstop shall be Fosroc Supercast SW20.
Performance Specification:
The waterstop must be a preformed elastomeric strip capable of integrating into existing waterstop networks. It must withstand a hydrostatic head of 60 meters and have an unrestrained volumetric expansion of up to 300%. It must not deteriorate under prolonged wet/dry cycling.
Storage & Safety
-
Shelf Life: 12 months when stored in cool, dry conditions away from sunlight in original unopened containers.
-
Health & Safety: There are no health hazards associated with Supercast SW20 during normal use.
