1. Surface Preparation (Crucial Step)
The integrity of the waterproofing depends entirely on preparation.
-
General: All surfaces must be smooth, clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, rust, and laitance.
-
Concrete: Must be at least 28 days old and well-dried. Uncured concrete releases gas when heated, causing blistering/delamination.
-
Metal: Wire brush to remove moss, loose paint, and rust.
-
Terrazo Tiles: Repair damaged joints and ensure tiles are firmly grouted.
-
Asphalt/Felt: Cut blisters crosswise, dry, and re-bond with adhesive.
2. Priming Instructions
-
Concrete, Terrazo, & General Surfaces:
-
Dilute BITUMAT Synroof Hi Build with 20% water.
-
Warning: Do not dilute more than 20%, or bonding strength will decrease.
-
-
Metal Roofs:
-
Apply a rust-inhibitive primer.
-
Apply metal primer to corroded surfaces.
-
-
Algae/Fungal Areas:
-
Clean with a stiff-bristled broom.
-
Treat with a fungicide.
-
Apply primer (Synroof diluted 20% with water).
-
3. Application Procedure
-
Condition: Ensure the primer is completely dry before starting.
-
Method:
-
Apply in separate coats.
-
Apply each coat at a right angle to the previous one (cross-layering).
-
Tip: Use a different color for each coat to ensure consistent coverage.
-
-
Coverage/Thickness:
-
Apply 2 coats at approximately 0.8 Kg/sqm per coat (excluding primer).
-
Target Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 0.5mm to 1.5mm.
-
-
Reinforcement (Sandwich System):
-
Recommended for areas anticipating structural movement, pipes, drains, and upstands.
-
Embed a 60/80 gsm thermo-bonded polyester mesh into the wet first coat.
-
4. Curing Time
-
Between Coats: Allow 24 hours.
-
Final Cure: 48 hours at normal temperatures.
-
Note: Do not lay insulation or protection until fully cured.
5. Mechanical Protection (Post-Waterproofing)
-
Accessible Roofs (Walkable):
-
Non-woven polyester separation layer.
-
Thermal insulation boards.
-
Kraft paper or Polyethylene sheet.
-
Concrete screed (4-5cm) or cement tiles.
-
-
Non-Accessible Roofs:
-
Non-woven polyester separation layer.
-
Insulation boards.
-
Second separation layer.
-
Washed gravel (min depth 5cm).
-
6. Storage & Cleanup
-
Cleanup: Flush all tools and hoses with water immediately after use.
-
Storage: Keep away from direct sunlight. Store between +5°C and 30°C. Protect from frost.
-
Shelf Life: Minimum 1 year in unopened containers.
-
Packaging: 20 Kg Metal Pails

7. Application Equipment
This coating is versatile and can be applied using the following methods depending on site conditions:
-
Brush
-
Roller
-
Squeegee
-
Spray Equipment: If spraying, ensure equipment suitability prior to use. A nozzle size of at least 0.028 inch is required to handle the material viscosity.
8. Application Procedure
-
Technique: Apply the material in separate coats. Each subsequent coat should be applied at a right angle (90°) to the previous coat (cross-hatch method) to ensure complete sealing.
-
Visual Guide: It is recommended to use a different color for each coat. This provides a visual indicator to ensure consistent coverage and helps prevent missed spots.
9. Coverage and Thickness
-
Coverage Rate: Consumption varies based on the type of substrate, surface regularity (roughness), and the application method used.
-
Dry Film Thickness (DFT): The final thickness should be determined by the specific requirements of the roof. The system is designed to build up a final dry film thickness between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm.
